Personal Thoughts
The Human Growth and Development CLEP was surprisingly (and happily) easy for me. Whether you find it so depends on your background knowledge. If you've taken the Introductory Sociology CLEP, you'll see some overlap. The same goes for many of the Psychology CLEPs, though I'd actually recommend you take this one first if you can. It'll start you off easy with the number of theories and theorists you need to memorize instead of dumping a mountain of them like the pure Psychology CLEPs. There’s a fair amount of content repetition across the psychology CLEPs, so studying them in the right order can make a big difference.
For instance, you'll need to study psychologists such as Erikson and Freud for this exam, and these names also appear on other exams, including Introductory Psychology, Educational Psychology, and various DSST exams. Understanding their theories early on can really help lighten the load later.
Planning your CLEP exams with content overlap in mind is a smart move. It not only saves you time but also reinforces key concepts across multiple subjects. This exam benefits from that kind of strategic planning.
Human Growth and Development covers a wide range of material, from infancy through old age. Most adults are at least somewhat familiar with the general ideas—stages of life, basic psychological development, learning theories—but passing the exam requires a more detailed understanding. Expect to dive into things like cognitive development, behavioral theories, emotional and social growth, and the biological factors that influence human development.
In short, while this exam is on the easy side of the spectrum, it still demands solid preparation. If you’re new to psychology or haven’t taken a CLEP before, be sure to give yourself enough study time. But if you’re building on previous exams or already have a background in the subject, you’ll find that a lot of the material connects in meaningful ways.
