Personal Thoughts
If you were good at history in school or enjoy watching the History Channel, this test shouldn't be too difficult. The area where most people struggle with history exams is memorizing all those pesky dates. The good news about the History of the United States I CLEP is that it doesn’t rely heavily on dates. Most of the questions are more focused on understanding historical developments, causes, and effects rather than rote memorization.
That said, don’t make the mistake of walking in without studying. Even if you’re naturally good at history, there will likely be topics you haven’t encountered before. Expect questions on early colonization efforts, the formation of early political parties like the Whigs and Loyalists, Native American nations, key battles in the War of 1812, and the beginnings of Reconstruction after the Civil War. If any of these topics sound unfamiliar, it’s a good idea to brush up before test day.
This exam rewards those who can understand the big picture of early American history rather than just memorizing names and dates. A solid review of the major movements, conflicts, and political developments from the colonial period through the end of Reconstruction will go a long way in helping you pass.
